Normandy Events in 2019

Antique French Calvados Jar

This enchanting glazed stoneware jar was crafted in a small village in Normandy. It has beautiful clean country design lines and plenty of personality.

What’s more, it was used to store and age calvados, an apple brandy that is produced in this region of France.

The glazed exterior is a classic gres color and has the incised initials G M on the front and 3 on the handle. It has a lovely patina with lots of glaze variations.

Jugs with thumbing around the footrim were common in the Middle Ages and have long been thought to counteract the’sagging’ bottoms found on some medieval jugs which can roll over when filled.
