Vintage cider jug

If you are an avid apple cider lover, you’re sure to appreciate this beautiful antique French (Normandy) lead glass cider jug. It dates to the mid-19th century and is in exceptional antique condition.

This beautiful Victorian French (Normandy) cider jug is a lovely example of the style known as “levante”. It has a very curved spout and a long neck with applied rings.

It is engraved with castle and leaf motifs along with a stylized flower. It is in excellent antique condition with minor chips to the spout and rim.

The ‘thumbing’ found on the bottom of medieval jugs has been much debated. However, recent experimentation has suggested that the feature may have been designed to prevent the jug from rolling about when being placed on a table.

Rouen faience

The city of Rouen has been producing faience, or tin-glazed earthenware, since at least the 1540s. It is often considered to be the best in France, though it is influenced by Italian maiolica styles.
