Dead Sea salt has long been known as a powerful detoxifier. Because of its high concentration of salt, it has the ability to draw out toxins and impurities from the body. These toxins are then absorbed into the water surrounding the Dead Sea. The salt is believed by believers to help improve health and is often used by naturopathic doctors to treat patients with many different types of illnesses including: acne, fatigue, influenza, colds, inflammations, kidney disorders, tumors, stomach disorders, and skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. While bath salts can be helpful for these conditions, many people have also discovered that they can help detoxify the body and rid it of bodily ailments and afflictions.

Bath salts work by attracting moisture to the skin and thus facilitating perspiration. When a person takes a bath salts may also contain ingredients that help draw out impurities and toxins from the body. Common ingredients in bath salts include sodium hypochlorite, potassium hydroxide, and calcium carbonate. Other ingredients that bath salts may contain include lemon grass oil, aloe vera, and lavender oils. However not all ingredients in bath salts are safe or even effective. Some of the chemicals used to create these soaps and bathing salts may have negative side effects on some people.

Many companies have attempted to tackle the problems of toxic chemicals by using alternative methods. Most natural ingredients found in bath salts are completely safe when taken correctly. For example, salt and oils are the two most common ingredients in bath salts. Although most oils are safe, there are a few that may cause allergic reactions in some people.

One of the main problems with bath salts is that they work by stimulating the olfactory nerves located in the nose and mouth. The chemicals in the bath salts send a message to the olfactory nerves, which activate them and cause them to send signals to the brain resulting in a feeling of pleasure or calm. As a result of this reaction the person taking the bath salts may feel a sensation of relaxation, a glow, a tingling sensation, a rush of energy or as an increase in blood pressure. In some cases these feelings are so powerful that they can actually be dangerous. It has been proven that taking too much of a bath salts product may result in a headache, fatigue, nausea, and extreme anxiety.

Crystal bath salts have also been shown to have the same effects as bath salts with some minor variations. The crystals used in bath salts are usually made of sodium or potassium hydroxide. These types of crystals do not work on the olfactory nerves directly, however they do affect the brain. Crystal salts can cause nausea, a flushed face, headaches, diarrhea, and sweating.

Although bath salts to use the same stimulation techniques, the dangers stem from the manner in which they are made and how these chemicals affect the body. To make bath salts you must use a chemical base. These bases are composed mainly of sodium and potassium hydroxide. Sodium creates water and potassium creates an electrical charge. These two chemicals combine to form sodium hydroxide and this is then mixed with an acidic base such as lemon juice, wine, or ammonia.

While there are many benefits to using bath salts there are also some serious dangers. These chemicals are used to stimulate the skin and deliver a controlled amount of electricity to the skin. Unfortunately, this electric shock can cause the skin to overreact and the user can experience serious consequences. This can include things such as swelling, redness, irritation, burning, itching, and pain. Some of these serious side effects can include permanent scars, permanent nerve damage, permanent vision loss, breathing problems such as pneumonia, and even death.
